Steeves Summary # 23: Multicultural Day         October 2005

Last week, RVA celebrated their annual event “Multicultural Day.” Picture a chapel of over 500 people of all shades and colors, coming from varying countries, many speaking multiple languages. Students as well as staff were all decked out wearing their National flags, some having them drawn on their faces. Among the crowd, you could see traditional dress from countries around the world. One student was dressed in the blue and yellow of Sweden, carrying a Canadian flag (attached to a hockey stick), and reading a

scripture passage in Arabic. A few of the Korean girls were wearing brightly colored hanboks. Kangas and decorative head scarves were worn by some of the Kenyan girls. Quite a few staff and students were wearing USA T-shirts and looking mighty patriotic. Even though the room was overtaken with the red, white, and blue of the American flag, all the minority groups were given their turns in the spotlight as they proudly carried their flags one at a time to the platform. Twenty three Nationalities of students were represented that morning.

As I sat there impressed with all the countries that are affected by this school, the MC began listing all of the countries where the students' parents were serving. RVA helps parents who serve in twenty-two countries in Africa and the Middle East. These parents currently work under twenty-eight Christian organizations. We help support well known organizations like AIM, SIM, Southern Baptist International Mission Board, Red Sea Team, Samaritian's Purse, and Canadian Baptist Ministries.

Being at Rift Valley Academy on Multicultural Day was like seeing the end times when “...every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11)

It's a privilege to be a part of world missions as we serve in Africa.

Blessings,

Bernadine, Michael, Julianne and Evan
