Steeves' Summary Volume 2 #2: More Than a Coffee House                              May 2009

Little did I know that sharing my burden about Kenya's drought with one good friend would eventually lead to eleven women from her Bible study support the Feed My Lambs project. They decided among themselves to put on a coffee house to raise funds to help the people of Kenya. As I watched these women in action in preparation of this great event, I knew the whole experience was going to be more than a coffee house.

My friend Joan was able to encourage a quiet group of ladies to move out of their comfort zones and prepare a coffee house.  This was a huge undertaking for them. For weeks, Joan's glowing report regarding the ladies was, “The women are so excited about the coffee house! They are working hard getting things ready.”

When I heard about the coffee house was going to be announced on three radio stations and the women were putting up posters around the city, I knew these women meant business! One of the ladies took the time and effort to sew up colorful center pieces for all the tables, adding to the atmosphere.  She also made beautiful scarves to identify all the ladies running the program. Each table was overflowing with food. Our master of ceremonies claimed that speaking in public was something very new to her yet she shone in her role. It was encouraging to see this group of ladies become empowered by each other and their experience as they dealt with the coffee house.

Not only did the ladies from the Bible study group leave a wonderful impression, the performers for the evening shared their songs with enthusiasm and were inspiring.  A few of them also shared personal stories. To lighten the atmosphere, Joan's husband Roy told his typical corny jokes which deserved lots of groans and chuckles. What a magical evening! Plans for the coffee house were started before we found out we were returning to Kenya, so the program gave us an opportunity to announce our return to Kenya.

Thanks to all of those involved in the coffee house and all who came to support Feed My Lambs.  The money raised will make a difference for those who need it the most during the current drought in Kenya.

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8
