Steeves' Summary #7: Renewed Life
November
2009
The rains have arrived in Kenya! Crops have been planted and everything is green, a great hope for the next crop. Please pray that there will be enough rain for crops to mature. In some places in Kenya, there has been too much rain causing flooding. This is particularly a concern around the Somali refugee camps in Daadab. A Window to Kenya.
The internet has made the world so much smaller.
I remember the first email I received from my parents in
Kenya in 1995 and how it felt
like they were much closer. In 2006, I set
up a
camera looking across the RVA campus at the Rift Valley. It
sent a picture to the internet every few minutes. From my
home in Canada I've been watching the
sun
set in Kenya, and I've seen the grass turning green as the rains come. On one holiday , Bernadine and I were sitting at a lodge watching a parade of animals go by. I thought, "wouldn't it be wonderful advertising to have a camera on the internet watching this waterhole?" Next week there will be a camera installed overlooking that same waterhole. Little did I know that I would part of this project. Earlier this year, I was contacted by a Canadian businessman in Nairobi about the possibility of setting up some webcams in Kenya. Elsen is a pilot and used the RVA webcam to view weather conditions in that area. He thought cameras would be great for viewing weather conditions at different destinations, as well as potential advertising for lodges and tourist locations. He's done marketing and installation while I've worked on some technical details and set up the website. Currently, we have 10 webcams with more coming. It has been fun to keep an eye on what is is happening half way around the globe. It also makes us realize how things have changed to make the world smaller. When my parents went to Kenya in 1967, it took a few months before they were able to send photos back to their families. If you want to see some of these views of Kenya, take a look at www.kenyawebcam.com . Kenya is 7 hours ahead of us right now, so don't be surprised if it is night time when you check the site. Finances: We currently have 47% of the funds needed for us to get to Kenya and get set up. We know that people have pledged at least 13% of what we need on a monthly basis. If you are planning on supporting us, please contact AIM with that information. We need prayer for monthly donors to allow us to go to Kenya next year. For more information on supporting us financially, please see our donation page. Blessings, Michael, Bernadine, Julianne
